Our story

Built by a teacher,
for teachers.

QuillScan was born out of a real classroom problem — and the conviction that beautiful, handwritten student work can be faithfully preserved and easily shared with families.

Who I am

Almost 20 years in the classroom

I teach an integrated middle school History and Religion curriculum at a small parochial liberal arts school in Michigan. My students compose essays by hand, draw maps, and regularly complete copy and imitative writing work in cursive. After nearly two decades in the classroom, I've experienced the almost total adoption of digital technology across every facet of teaching and learning. I'm grateful to be at a school where penmanship still matters.

The problem

Too many steps between the paper and the parent

But the question remained: how to preserve quality student written work while communicating feedback to both students and parents in a timely, useful, and efficient way? I'd used phone-based scan apps before, but every app always required two or three added steps to get the work from my phone to the parent, or to archive it for accreditation or parent-teacher conferences, or to get a stack of papers sorted, graded, and uploaded into my grade book.

This past school year, I finally decided to build something better.

Building it

Not a developer — but curious enough to try

I'm not a developer by trade, but I've become genuinely interested in technology over the past few years as I've explored educational tools and used them creatively to support my homeschooled children and become a more effective teacher in the classroom. QuillScan has been through many iterations, always moving toward a more beauty-first and teacher-friendly version.

The hardest part was getting the teacher-centric pieces right: auto-name detection, auto-grade detection, alphabetizing scans, simple one-click email to parents. The goal was always that it should feel like a natural extension of how teachers already work. The last thing a teacher needs is another added step. QuillScan seems like a perfect blend of beauty, efficiency, and clarity.

Cheers,
Brian
